FAQ: Hybrid School Model – Half On/Half Off

1. What would in school feature? Will they include the specials in person? Or will they just be following what we are currently doing?

Students will be in the academic classes and some arts classes (PE, Music, SEL and Computers, Story Telling for 7th-8th) will be in person, but not all some would still need to be virtual.

2. Would families attend the same days?

Yes, families will attend on the same days. This will make it easier for families.

3. What does this mean for the kids who are there 5 days a week? Will they have different students in the classroom throughout the week or will they be with the kids they are currently with?

The students would be in their academic classroom for 2 days and utilize on site support for the other 3. They would have consistent students throughout the 2 days with their classroom teacher. The other 3 – it depends on how many families sign up for this. We do our best to keep the kids consistently together.

4. How will attendance be done?

On virtual days students will still need to check the attendance box by 9:00 am. For in person learning class begins at 7:30 am. Students arriving after 7:30 am are considered late on those days.

5. How will Drop off and Pick up work?

Drop off will begin at 7:15 am and end at 7:30 am students will go straight to the classroom. Students arriving after 7:30 am will be required to sign in. To do this parents will need to call the office and office staff will come out to check in your child. Temperatures will be taken at the car during drop off. Friday drop off for on site-support for those that need it will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Pick up will begin at 3:15 pm and end at 3:30 pm. Parents will stay in the car and let the staff member know who they are picking up. Staff will call into the classroom to have students sent out. Any student left after 3:45 pm must check into the club. If students are not allowed to go to the club then authorities will be notified.

Dear MAA Families – Sep 25, 2020

Dear Mesa Arts Academy Families,

On July 23rd Governor Ducey and State Superintendent Hoffman announced the reopening of school would be left to local control and that School Districts are to use Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) benchmarks (listed below) to determine when it is safe to reopen for on-site learning. For more information see AZ Department of Health Services 1) A decline in cases and/or less than 100 cases per 100,000 individuals for 2 consecutive weeks. 2) Two consecutive weeks with percent positivity below 7%. 3) Two consecutive weeks with hospital visits for COVID-like illness below 10%. We have been closely monitoring these benchmarks and as of September 9th, both Maricopa and Yavapai Counties have met all 3 benchmarks, both counties are currently in the moderate zone and are trending in a positive direction.

We continue to be cautious in our processes, rest assured that we are making decisions with your student’s safety as our top priority. We have used data, science, and guidance from local, State and National health officials to help make these decisions. With that in mind, we are happy to announce that MAA will be opening for on-site learning on Monday, October 12th.

Students and parents will have a choice of on-site, in person classes or continuing with remote virtual learning classes. We will continue to offer both in person on campus instruction and virtual learning. It is important that we know ahead of time who will be attending class in person and who will remain in the virtual learning format. That said, students and parents will soon receive a survey, where you may indicate your choice of attending school in person or continuing with remote learning.

We will begin with a hybrid of in person learning where half of the students are on campus and half are in virtual learning. This means that students will be split into two groups. Group A will attend in person learning on campus on Mondays and Tuesdays. Group B will attend in person learning on campus on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Friday will be a virtual day for all students. This means your child will have two days of in person learning and 3 days of virtual learning. MAA will be open Monday through Friday and will still offer on-site support for students who need to come every day. For on-site support on Fridays we will be doing a late start, school will begin at 8:30 a.m. (See Hybrid Model Half On/Half Off FAQ)

It is important to note that while on campus, students must follow all COVID-19 health protocols listed in our mitigation plan posted on our website (Health Policy). It has been a long 6 months since we last had students on campus for in person learning and we are truly excited about having our students back. Please look for the survey where you will make your choice in format. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or email.

Thank-you,

Parent Letter – Galileo

Dear Parent/Guardian,

For the past several years, Mesa Arts Academy has utilized a school-wide math and literacy assessment program called Galileo. Students take Galileo assessments 3 to 4 times each year to help us determine every child’s individual progress throughout the school year. Not only do the results of these tests guide teachers as they plan future lessons at each grade level, but they also determine what standards your child needs to master prior to taking Arizona’s statewide achievement test, AzM2 (previously AzMerit).

The math test takes approximately 90  minutes and the ELA test will take approximately 90  minutes.

Our district will administer Galileo testing throughout the next week, September 21st – September 25th. Testing will take place either at home or in-person on campus.* Please find your child’s time and testing on their classroom agenda.

Should students choose to take their Galileo tests at home, testing will take place at the allotted timeframes (above) so that teachers are able to open testing windows and close them once every student has completed each module. Although these are not timed tests, it is encouraged that students complete each section within one sitting.

Ideal testing environments are quiet places where testers can focus. It is crucial that each assessment is completed without the support of a parent, guardian, or family member. Mastery of standards at the beginning of the year is rare; should your child’s score not reflect his/her assessments from the previous year, we will require that he or she test within a socially-distanced setting on campus.

We thank you for your collaboration as we continue to meet the academic needs of your child.

Sincerely,

Miranda Koperno

*Grade 1:
If you have a child in Grade 1, this will be his/her first Galileo assessment and will therefore require teacher assistance. For this reason, we ask that all Grade 1 students test within a socially-distanced setting on campus. Masks will be required. Please contact Patsy Martinez at (480) 844-3965 to schedule a time to bring your child to school. Both assessments will be given and should take approximately 120 minutes. We appreciate your cooperation and value your collaboration!

Estimado Padre/Tutor,

Distance Learning Plan Template for Charter Schools

On June 24, 2020, Governor Ducey issued Executive Order 2020-41 Prioritizing Kids and Schools During COVID-19 regarding the reopening of schools for school year 2020-2021. As part of the Executive Order, all public schools may submit a Distance Learning Plan (DLP) to receive the flexibility to offer distance learning options for students without an approved Arizona Online Instruction (AOI) program for the 2020-2021 school year.

On-site Support Centers/Centros de Apoyo en el Sitio

In accordance with Governor Doug Ducey’s Executive Order 2020-51, Mesa Arts Academy will offer free on-site support centers for students who need a safe place to go during the day starting August 17, 2020.

Students will be able to log in and work on their remote learning in a supervised environment. These on-site support centers will not provide the same experience as an engaging classroom environment and do not include in-person instruction by a certified teacher.

Transportation will not be provided.

Who’s eligible to attend?

The intention of the Governor’s Executive Order is that the district serve children of first responders, children in DCS custody, students with disabilities, students lacking adequate technology at home to participate in distance learning, and any student needing a safe place to participate in remote learning during school hours.

Students must be previously registered with the district at their regular school of attendance to be eligible to register for on-site learning centers. Registration will be taken until the site is filled.

What will my child be doing at the on-site support center?

Students will participate in remote learning offered by their assigned teachers. MAA staff will assist students, as needed, to access daily lessons on the computer through Google Classroom and Acellus.

Students will participate in Brain Breaks, mask breaks, and lunch breaks.

K-8th grade students are expected to attend the regular school day hours. If they wish to leave early, a parent or guardian must come to school to pick them up.

Regular daily attendance will be taken. The school must be notified if any students will be absent. Students will still be required to mark attendance in Google Classroom. Families will be notified if students receive an unexcused absence.

Student and family expectations

Students must follow MAA Health policies, including mandatory face coverings. If a parent does not want their child to wear a face covering, the child will be unable to attend the on-site support center.

Each student is required to bring their MAA-issued device (fully charged), power cord, and headphones to complete school work.

Each student should bring a filled water bottle.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Students are expected to follow the MAA Guidelines for Student Behavior. Failure to follow behavior guidelines could result in a student losing the option to attend an on-site support center.

Frequently asked questions
What is the staff-to-student ratio at the on-site support center?

The student-to-staff ratio is 10:1.

Who will help my child with learning while they are at the on-site support center?

Classrooms will be staffed with paraprofessionals and other hourly support staff to supervise students and assist them with logging on to remote learning. Teachers will continue to teach remote learning from home and will not be available at the on-site support center.

Will students be kept together by grade level?

Students will be clustered in groups of similar students to allow supervising staff to become familiar with the students in their assigned group, easily identify who is absent, and provide the safest tracking and distancing possible. The groups might be multi-aged clusters.

In what area of the school will my child be during the day?

Students will be supervised in classrooms.

Does my child have to wear a face covering?

Yes, students must wear a face covering at all times. Breaks will be scheduled throughout the day, including a lunch period, so that students may take their face covering off while maintaining safety protocols. If a parent does not want their child to wear a face covering, the child will be unable to attend the on-site center. Adjustments will be made for students who might have an existing medical condition that does not allow a student to safely wear a face covering.
